Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on increasing awareness and restoring contact with yourself and your environment. It supports you in recognising and working through blocks — such as trauma or unresolved experiences — that may prevent you from living freely and fully.

Rather than analysing why something happens, Gestalt Therapy focuses on how you experience things in the here and now. By becoming more aware of your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and behaviour in the present moment, you can discover new and creative ways of responding to life.

In relation to others, Gestalt Therapy is concerned with both connection and autonomy. Not one or the other, but the freedom to move between these apparent opposites — being in contact while remaining true to yourself.

The aim of Gestalt Therapy

The aim of Gestalt Therapy is to deepen your awareness of who you are and to support you in taking greater responsibility and making more conscious choices in your life.

Gestalt Therapy seeks balance, personal growth, vitality, and relief from psychological or emotional difficulties by enhancing awareness and fostering genuine contact — both with yourself and with others. This allows you to experience more freedom in how you live, while remaining attuned to your situation and context.

Awareness, contact, and growth

Gestalt Therapy centres on awareness, contact, responsibility, integration, growth, authenticity, and finding creative ways to address difficult situations or unfinished experiences.

In therapy, we work on developing awareness and experimenting with new or different behaviours — always in ways that feel meaningful and appropriate for you. Through this process, insight is not only understood intellectually but experienced and integrated.

Gestalt Therapy is therefore about growing into who you truly are. It invites you to become more whole, more spontaneous, and more able to move freely and openly in your life.

Working through what holds you back

Gestalt Therapy is based on the belief that you already have the capacity within you to engage with life. At times, however, this capacity may feel blocked. You may struggle with grief, pain, anger, fear, or indecision, and find it difficult to move forward on your own.

In our conversations, we explore what has become stuck and how you can gradually return to movement. Therapy supports you in reconnecting with your energy, resilience, and sense of meaning, so that you can continue your life with greater vitality and fulfilment.

Who is Gestalt Therapy suitable for?

People come to my practice because they feel stuck in their lives or are dissatisfied with how their lives are unfolding. Often, they struggle with feelings of emptiness or meaninglessness, or with the sense that they cannot change their situation on their own.

This may manifest in personal life, at work, through life transitions, or in unexplained physical complaints. Many people feel overwhelmed by the complexity of life or by the demands placed upon them.

A client’s experience

“Robert supported me with several interconnected concerns. From a place of strength and calm, he guided me empathically through a deepening process. Through clear boundaries and depth of contact, space and clarity emerged, allowing me to continue my path enriched.”

When Gestalt Therapy can be helpful

Gestalt Therapy can be applied to a wide range of difficulties, particularly in situations where communication and relationships are important.

It is often used successfully in working with:

  • burn-out
  • anxiety
  • stress
  • grief and loss
  • depression
  • indecision
  • a general sense of meaninglessness
  • trauma

One of the central aims of Gestalt Therapy is to bring clarity to relationships — with others and with yourself. The emphasis lies on autonomy, responsibility, and clear boundaries.

Gestalt Therapy in work and organisational contexts

Gestalt Therapy is also well-suited for people who feel overburdened at work or who have lost overview of their activities and priorities.

It can support you in:

  • reducing stress in the workplace
  • clarifying responsibilities
  • distinguishing between behaviour that is still functional and behaviour that no longer serves you
  • exploring relational dynamics and boundaries
  • developing new perspectives on work-related challenges
